WELCOME TO THE STARTUP LAB
SERIES 1 // STARTING ++ FOUNDATIONS

Watch a vid, read the text, do a challenge - find some inspiration. The lab is here to help you start, and if you have started already - it’s a place to learn and grow!

SERIES 1 // EPISODE ONE #JUSTSTART

Just start now, with what you have, you don’t need to give up your day job or sell your house, the idea of a startup is unknown so *lean* on all those startup methods to go in lean and fast and get to market to see if you even have a market!

I think it is best to give yourself a time frame and budget to work back from and then if you set a task and budget and do chunks of work in that time and on that budget - you will know if you want to go again and again and again.

AGAIN - it is all in the doing, what you think and what people say is always polar opposite to what happens and what people DO.

If there is one thing I want you to remember it is that ^^ learn by doing, and once you start doing, you will know the next steps and even if the nest step is to stop or pivot that is also a great place to be instead of what you imagine to be in your mind.

TRANSCRIPT We could spend all day talking about all the metaphors and inspiring quotes - so we aren’t even going to go there however there is one quote I do want you to remember

“Ideas are easy it is all in the execution”

You're probably thinking “that's great Simone, but I have no idea what to do”

AWESOME because I am going to let you in on a little secret, no one does!

Just do stuff, you will learn by doing and if you want some tools to use to get started - jump on over to the website and dive deeper in the startup lab - look for episode ZER ONE - #JustStart

SERIES 1 // EPISODE TWO VISION AND MISSION

Do you have a vision and mission statement? If you do great, don’t be shy share it with us on social media and if you don’t, well…you are here now so lets do this! (fist pump emoji).

The mission is the day to day - and the vision is the pie in the sky - big audacious goal

A startup without a vision or mission is going to be a sad startup.

Your vision and mission should be what drives you at the start, the reason why you “started up”. It should be a simple statement, something you are proud of and tells people about it, something even worthy of a little PDA!

SERIES 1 // EPISODE THREE BUSINESS NAMES

There is a lot of tools you can access to help find a business name, the most common is the Igor Naming Guide.

Most people just fall into a “description” of their product or service, but that can work against you because how do you stand out from everyone else?

It also is common for startups to launch and then after a year or two decide to completely re-brand because their original idea has changed so much based on the market and that original name might not work, and that is OK too.

However this can also occur because you haven't done your homework and find yourself infringing on an existing name and brand. I want to show an example of just a plain bad name and how difficult it is to change, so make the time do the research and get it right but also know in startup land, you need to be agile and ready to fail fast - adapt and move on.

SERIES 1 // EPISODE FOUR UVP = Unique Value Proposition

Unique Value Proposition is really important and it shouldn’t really change if you evolve and grow.

Adapted from the Unique Sales Proposition and pioneered by Rosser Reeves an old school TV advertising genius (see the wiki link below) it was a Harvard Business School professor Theodore Levitt who suggested that, "Differentiation is one of the most important strategic and tactical activities in which companies must constantly engage."

So it is really important you take some time to investigate and understand your UVP and then start using it!

In 2019, if you say you have no to little competition it shows how little research you have done, you actually want to have competition because that proves there is a market need and demand for your offering. HOWEVER it is the UVP that lets you stand out and if you really are authentic, your UVP will attract the right peeps because you can’t be everything to everyone, if you know your ideal customer and they find you through your UVP - well that’s where the magic happens = sales, customers, new business and repeat customers that will rave about you!

SERIES 1 // EPISODE FIVE The S WORD - SALES

SELLING DOESN’T mean selling out. And once you realise you are the salesman and figure out to be comfortable with that - you will win!

We can build the best thing but if no one knows about it, and no one uses it - it is pointless. Some of the best things - need a lot of sales to get off the ground!

Even Apple needed to be “sold” Steve Jobs and Woz sold their computer and VW to raise some funds because the bank wouldn’t give them anything and even with orders in the pipeline, suppliers wouldn’t release parts without cash up front. I tell you this story because people think sales = selling your product but sales is also selling yourself to potential clients, investors, the bank and even future hires.

There are plenty of tools available and even if you are uncomfortable with it - this is important. I find the people that think they don’t have to do it - are the ones that fail, even the thought of cold calling might give you hives, but this is also a great opportunity to speak to your ideal customer and target market - if you don't close the deal move on, but also take the time to learn and grow. If you think cold calling is dead - know this...

Kalanick went from cold calling limousine drivers to growing Uber into an empire valued at $68 billion.

SERIES 1 // EPISODE SIX FAIL FAST PIVOT

The top reason why startups fail is they fail to meet a market need. So far you should know that everything we do is lean and fast because a startup has a lot of assumptions and very little time and money to get that assumption right, to fill the market need = we call this product market fit.

However failure isn’t the kiss of death it used to be, failure is an important part of the journey, if you aren’t failing - how will you learn and grow? It isn't the failure itself it is how you pick yourself up and go again.

Failure can be the driver of change and from failure, you could then fall into what you are supposed to do and be.

I can almost guarantee with a little time and the gift of hindsight, some times failure can be your greatest gift, embrace it, don't let it deter you, it is part of the journey.

SERIES 1 // EPISODE SEVEN YOU ARE YOUR OWN BOSS

Oh, there is nothing on the internet that can cover all the things I want to talk about here! Well there is, on my research, there were a few articles about psychopaths (yep true).

Being your own boss is both liberating and terrifying, doing all the things you wanted to do - but also being responsible for all the things you do.

The real key here is to find a tribe, this could be your trusty accountant and legal team. This isn't for your friends and fam to help - even though they should and I hope they do - it is your peers, your tribe, your early adopters that count!

Starting up can be so hard and lonely and once we have a tribe IRL or even online and start sharing those stories and hearing about how others have overcome these challenges, this will help because we all have challenges, especially at the start when we are trying to figure everything out and do all the things!

Go to your local BEC - Business Chamber, Women in Business Network, local Aus Industry Rep, find a mentor and search and find some ace facebook groups (there is plenty out there like ‘Sydney Startups’). Find those people and have those convos and this will lighten the load because a problem shared and out of your head is a problem halved!

Remember everything you do is right, even if it is wrong and what I mean by that is - you will do things wrong, you need to so you can learn and grow - as Zuki says break things fast, move on!

SELECT ALL DELETE #justkidding

If you want to take back control of your inbox - this is the Ep and challenge for you.

Make some time to do this, it will need your time to clear out the old and put the system and processes in place so you don't ever go back!

Emailing is a necessary evil in business but email is just like meetings - its the “stuff” work, it isn't deep work and it isn’t really achieving results or outcomes, except sending emails…

There are heaps of tools, but the best tool of all is a bit of discipline, starting first with the above making some time to go through and sort your email out and drawing that line in the sand and moving forward with that system or process so your inbox isn't out of control.

The best way I have found to manage email is to cluster emails - so either first thing and/or last thing of the day. If you have people or “emails” that are time sensitive set up some alerts so you know when they come in, and don’t waste all your time checking email…

One great tool is the Pomodoro Technique which isn’t going to solve your email but it is a great time management tool that you could use for…social media too (hint hint).
